Radial shockwave therapy

When pain has stayed, it may be time to reassess.

Shockwave may be considered for some persistent tendon and soft-tissue problems. At Valley Rehab, every decision starts with an assessment—not with the equipment.

  • Assessment before treatment
  • Non-invasive procedure
  • Part of a wider rehabilitation plan

The video can help visitors understand the equipment, but suitability is always decided through an individual assessment.

What is shockwave therapy?

Pressure waves delivered to a carefully selected area.

Radial shockwave therapy is a non-invasive procedure. A hand-held device passes controlled acoustic pressure waves through the skin to the area being treated. Treatment settings and the number of sessions vary, which is why a proper assessment matters first.

3+ Persistent symptomsOften considered only after a problem has been present for several months and appropriate first-line care has not settled it.

When it may be discussed

Persistent tendon pain needs the right diagnosis first.

Shockwave is used for selected musculoskeletal problems. These are examples of areas that may be assessed—not a promise that treatment is suitable.

Heel and foot

Including selected persistent plantar heel presentations.

Achilles tendon

For some long-standing tendon presentations after assessment.

Knee and thigh

Including selected patellar tendon presentations.

Elbow and shoulder

Only where the diagnosis and current guidance support its use.

Shockwave is not suitable for everyone, and evidence varies by condition. Your therapist will discuss the uncertainties, alternatives and relevant risks before any treatment decision.

What happens

A careful process from assessment to aftercare.

We explain each stage and adjust the plan to your presentation and comfort.

Choose an appointment
  1. 01Assessment and screeningWe examine the problem, discuss your history and check whether shockwave is an appropriate option.
  2. 02Clear explanation and consentWe talk through what treatment involves, the available alternatives, uncertainties and possible risks.
  3. 03Targeted applicationGel is applied and the handpiece delivers pressure waves to the selected area. The sensation can be strong and is monitored throughout.
  4. 04Review and rehabilitationWe check your response and keep the treatment connected to the wider plan for your movement and strength.

A balanced view

Why consider Shockwave—and what should you weigh up?

The fairest answer includes the potential benefits, the uncertainty in the research and the practical downsides. Your own diagnosis and circumstances matter more than a general success claim.

Why it may be considered

  • It is non-invasive and does not involve an injection or surgical incision.
  • Some patients in Achilles studies reported less pain and better function.
  • It can be used alongside an individual movement and strengthening plan.

What remains uncertain

  • Not everyone improves, and the likely benefit cannot be guaranteed.
  • Research results and treatment protocols have varied between studies.
  • Evidence and guidance differ depending on the exact condition being treated.

Possible downsides

  • The treatment can feel strong or uncomfortable while it is being applied.
  • Temporary redness, bruising, aching or numbness can occur.
  • Suitability and less common risks must be discussed before treatment.
